Grok exporter

Export Grok chats as Markdown.

A Grok chat can hold research replies, edited branches and files Grok made. Here is what each way of exporting keeps of them.

14-day trial, no card. Then $59 once, no subscription.

What people say about getting their chats out of Grok, and what actually helps, with or without Carry.

  • “Ctrl+P only printed one page of a long chat.”

Grok’s PDF option covers one response. Get the chat as a Markdown file first, then print it or use Export to PDF in Obsidian.

  • “My history rolled back weeks, and some chats open empty.”

Check grok.com on a computer as well as the app, then download your account data: a missing chat sometimes turns up there.

    Full answer
  • “The download is one huge JSON file.”

Your chats sit in prod-grok-backend.json, which is made for programs. A converter turns it into readable files.

  • “Select-all misses half the conversation.”

It only copies what the page has drawn. Work from a file instead: the account download, or one Markdown file per chat.

  • “I’m moving to Claude and want my Grok chats there.”

No tool moves them into Claude’s chat list. Save the ones you need as Markdown and add them to a Claude project.

Compare quicksort and mergesort.

**Assistant**

Both run in O(n log n) on average. The difference is in the worst case and in memory.

| | Quicksort | Mergesort |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Worst case | O(n²) | O(n log n) |
| Extra memory | O(log n) | O(n) |

**Human**

Is late November a good time to visit Kyoto? I care about autumn leaves but hate crowds.

**Assistant**

Late November is peak leaf season in Kyoto, so it is beautiful and busy at the same time.[^1]

| Week | Leaves | Crowds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mid November | Turning, best in the hills | Busy at weekends |
| Late November | Usually at their peak | Busiest of the year |
| Early December | Fading, still colourful in shaded gardens | Noticeably quieter |

To dodge the worst of it, go to famous temples like Kiyomizu-dera right at opening time, and spend the middle of the day in smaller gardens.[^2] The north of the city tends to turn a little earlier than the centre.[^3]

**Human**

So early December is the better trade-off for me?

**Assistant**

Probably, yes. You give up the very best colour for far fewer people, and many gardens still look good into the first week of December. Book a room early either way: hotels fill up for the whole season.

## Branch 1

**Human**

I’m starting a monthly email newsletter about easy day hikes near where I live. Can you suggest five names?

**Assistant**

Here are five, from plain to playful:

1. **The Day Hike**: says exactly what it is.
2. **Trailhead Monthly**: clear about when it arrives.
3. **Out and Back**: a nod to the most common kind of short hike.
4. **First Light Trails**: for a newsletter that likes early starts.
5. **Small Summits**: easy hikes that still end with a view.

Adding your area’s name to any of these makes it easier for local readers to find.

**Human**

I like Out and Back. Can you write a one-line description to go under it?

**Assistant**

**Out and Back**: one easy day hike a month, with the trail, how long it takes and where to get coffee after.

**Assistant**

Welcome to the first issue of **Out and Back**. Once a month I’ll send you one easy day hike: where it starts, how long it takes, and a good place to stop on the way home. This month it’s a two-hour loop with a lake at the halfway point.

Turn my monthly budget into a CSV I can import into a spreadsheet, with a column for each item’s share of the total.

Rent 1450
Groceries 420
Utilities 165
Transport 120
Phone and internet 85
Savings 400
Everything else 260

**Assistant**

Here’s your budget as a CSV, with a share column and a total row. It comes to 2,900 a month.

[household-budget.csv](files/household-budget.csv)

Rent takes exactly half. Groceries and savings come next, at about 14% each.

**Human**

If I cut everything else to 200, what share does savings get?

**Assistant**

Savings stays at 400, but its share rises to 14.1%, because the total drops to 2,840. If you move the 60 you cut into savings instead, the total stays at 2,900 and savings becomes 460, or 15.9%.

Press Save all

On the trial, Carry saves your latest 5 Grok chats, then new and changed ones each time you press Save all while signed in to grok.com. Carry opens the grok.com tab itself. A license saves the rest, slowly, with your browser open.

Your chats stay with you

  • Your chats stay on your computer: they go from your browser straight to your folder, and Carry never uploads them.
  • No Carry account and no API key. Carry reads through the Grok login you already have.
  • Carry asks for access to grok.com only when you connect Grok.
  • Four browser permissions: scripting, storage, alarms and idle.
  • It does fetch compatibility settings from carry.md and send anonymous usage counts, never your content. You can turn both off.

Questions

Questions, answered.

Does Grok have an export button?

Not for a single chat. xAI lets you download your account data from Settings → Data Controls, on grok.com or in the Grok app. Carry saves each chat as its own Markdown file instead. Source: xAI’s FAQ

What’s in Grok’s data download?

xAI’s FAQ doesn’t say. People who have downloaded it describe a zip with your chats in one large JSON file, prod-grok-backend.json, which needs a converter to read. The table above shows what Carry saves instead.More: How to export Grok chats

Does Carry save Grok chats in the background?

No. Grok saving is manual: open Carry and press Save all while you’re signed in to grok.com in the same browser. Carry finds or opens a grok.com tab itself and reads your chats there, because Grok only answers requests from its own page. ChatGPT and Claude are different: Carry saves those on its own.More: Does Carry save my chats on its own?

How much of my Grok history does Carry save?

The trial saves your latest 5 chats, then new and changed ones each time you press Save all. A license saves your whole Grok history. Carry spaces out its requests to Grok, so a long history takes a while with your browser open. If it stops, you can resume it.

Does Carry save DeepSearch and research replies?

Yes, the report text, in its chat. Grok no longer shows DeepSearch as a separate mode, and older DeepSearch reports and newer research replies save the same way. Turn on Include sources in Carry’s settings and citations become footnotes with a sources list. The search steps and result lists aren’t saved.

What happens to edited or regenerated replies?

Carry saves each branch as its own section in the chat’s file, so two answers never merge into one timeline.

Does it save images, videos or files Grok made?

Files Grok shows as cards are saved as originals, any type, in files/ next to the chat, and so are files you upload. Other files in the chat’s workspace are only listed by name. Images Grok generates or edits, and anything from Grok Imagine, aren’t saved.

Does Grok save my conversations?

Yes, in your history on grok.com and in the app, except Private Chat, the ghost icon. Those chats aren’t kept in your history and are deleted within 30 days, so Carry can’t save them either.

Is it free?

Carry has a 14-day trial with no card, then $59 once: a one-time payment, no subscription, with a 14-day refund. The trial saves your latest 5 Grok chats; a license saves your whole history. When the trial ends, saving stops and the files you saved stay yours.More: Pricing

Can I export to PDF or Word?

Not with Carry: it saves Markdown only, with no PDF or Word export. Grok’s own PDF option covers one response, so print a saved Markdown file instead, or use Export to PDF in Obsidian.

Does Carry upload my chats?

No. Your chats and files stay on your computer, in the folder you pick, and are never uploaded. There’s no Carry account and no API key: Carry reads through your Grok login and asks for access to grok.com only when you connect Grok. It does download compatibility settings from carry.md, which sees ordinary request details like your IP address, and it sends anonymous usage counts, never your content. You can turn both off. Pressing Activate sends your license key to Polar, which sells the license.More: Privacy details

Is Carry made by xAI?

No. Carry is independent, not affiliated with or endorsed by xAI.
