FAQ
Questions about saving your AI chats
Short answers on saving, exporting and losing ChatGPT, Claude and Grok chats. Where a longer guide exists, the answer links to it.
Lost or missing chats
Why did my ChatGPT chat history disappear?
Often it’s still in your account. Check that you’re signed in to the right account and workspace, search for the chat by name, and look in Settings → Data controls → Archived chats. If it’s still missing, request a data export to see what OpenAI still has stored.

Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?
No. OpenAI says a deleted chat can’t be restored in ChatGPT or through support, and a data export won’t bring it back. The only fallback is a copy you saved before it was deleted.

My Claude chats and projects disappeared. Are they gone?
Check claude.ai in a web browser first. Then request Claude’s data export: if your chats are in it, they still exist on Anthropic’s side. If they’re missing there too, only a copy you saved earlier can help.

My Grok history vanished, or a chat opens empty. What can I do?
Check grok.com on a computer as well as the app, then request your account data: one user found a chat in the download that grok.com no longer showed. Also rule out Private Chat, the ghost icon, whose chats don’t stay in your history and are deleted within 30 days.

Exporting all your chats
How do I export all my ChatGPT chats?
Go to Settings → Data controls → Export data and confirm. OpenAI emails a download link within 7 days, and it works for 24 hours, only while you’re signed in to the account that asked. The ZIP holds your chats as JSON, plus a chat.html file you can open in a browser.

How do I export my Claude chat history?
On claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Settings → Privacy and click Export data. Claude emails a download link that works for 24 hours while you’re signed in. The export holds your conversation and account data all at once: there’s no option for one chat or one project.

How do I export all my Grok chats?
Open Settings → Data Controls on grok.com or in the Grok app, or go to accounts.x.ai/data, and download your account data. Your chats are in the zip as one large JSON file (people who have opened it report it’s called prod-grok-backend.json). Run it through a converter to read them.

When the export doesn’t work
Why hasn’t my ChatGPT data export arrived?
It can take up to 7 days. Check inbox, spam and promotions for an email from noreply@tm.openai.com, and don’t request another export while one is pending. If the link says Not Found, open it while signed in to the account that asked for it, or request a new one if it’s past 24 hours.

How do I open conversations.json from my ChatGPT export?
To read your chats, open chat.html from the same ZIP in a browser. The JSON stores each conversation as a tree of message nodes, so getting one readable file per chat means running a converter. Large exports now come as numbered files like conversations-000.json, so point the converter at all of them.

Long chats
Why won’t my long chat copy or print?
Select-all and print work from the page, and a long chat isn’t all on the page at once. ChatGPT loads messages as you scroll and drops ones you’ve passed, so you get the start and the end. Use something that reads the chat’s data instead, like the official data export or Carry.

How do I print a whole Grok chat or save it as a PDF?
People report Ctrl+P printing a single page, and Grok’s own PDF option covers one response. Get the chat as a Markdown file first, from the account download with a converter or from an extension that reads the chat data. Then print that file, or use Export to PDF in Obsidian.

Saving one chat
How do I save one ChatGPT conversation?
ChatGPT has no button that saves one chat. A short chat copies or prints to PDF fine. For a long one, use a tool that reads the chat’s data rather than the page, such as the open-source chatgpt-exporter userscript or Carry.

How do I save a ChatGPT chat as a PDF?
There’s no built-in PDF export, so use the print dialog. Scroll through the whole chat first so older messages load, switch to light theme, then press Cmd/Ctrl+P and choose Save as PDF. Check the page count in the preview, because long chats often come out blank or cut off.

Can I export just one Claude chat?
Not with Claude’s export, which is all or nothing. Copy and paste works for a short chat. On a long one select-all can stop partway, so check the copy has the first message, the last one and a phrase from the middle.

Can I back up Claude chats as Markdown and then delete them?
Yes. Save the chat first, then open the file and check the first message, the last one and a phrase from the middle before you delete it in Claude. A file Carry saved stays in your folder after the chat is gone from claude.ai.

Changing accounts or losing access
Can I move my Claude chats to another account?
Not between personal accounts: Anthropic says exported data can’t be imported into another one. Moving a personal account into your company’s Team or Enterprise organization may bring chats and projects along, one way only. Otherwise, keep your chats as files and attach the ones you need in the new account.

How do I transfer my ChatGPT chats to another account?
Not as real chats. OpenAI’s workaround is to upload your exported JSON into one new chat in the other account, where ChatGPT can use it as reference. Your old chats won’t appear in the new sidebar, and memory, custom instructions and GPTs don’t move.

Can I export my chats from ChatGPT Business or Enterprise?
Not on your own. OpenAI says self-service export isn’t available in Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, and to ask your workspace owner. If you’re moving a personal account into a Business workspace, export it first.

I’m leaving my job. How do I keep my Claude chats?
Save them before your last day. Claude can’t change the email on an account, and both sign-in and the export link go through that email. On a Team or Enterprise plan, members can’t export their own data, so ask the primary owner before you go.

Will I lose my Claude projects if I downgrade or cancel?
Anthropic’s help articles don’t say. One user lost access to older projects when a Max plan ended, while others in the same thread saw no change. Save your projects before the plan ends.

Moving to Claude
Can I move my ChatGPT or Grok chats into Claude?
No tool moves them into Claude’s chat list, and Claude’s import feature is for memory, not chats. Save the chats you need as Markdown files, by hand or with Carry, and add them to a Claude project, where Claude uses them in every chat inside it.

How do I move my ChatGPT memory to Claude?
Ask ChatGPT to list what it remembers about you, then paste that into Claude’s memory import. It brings over memory only, not your chats, and it’s still experimental.

Projects
How do I export a Claude project?
Claude has no export for one project. The account export may include projects, but Anthropic doesn’t say, and a user report found its chats don’t record which project they came from. Carry saves each project as a folder with its instructions, files and chats; for projects in Claude’s newer threads view it doesn’t download the file library yet.

How do I back up a ChatGPT project?
ChatGPT’s data export can’t pick out one project: it’s the whole account, and OpenAI doesn’t say what it keeps of projects. Copy the project’s instructions out by hand and keep your own copies of its files. Carry saves the chats in your projects; saving each project as a folder with its instructions and files is new.

Can I back up my Claude Cowork tasks?
People report that Claude’s data export often leaves Cowork out. Carry saves each Cowork session as a Markdown note once you turn on Claude Cowork sessions in its settings (it’s off by default): your prompt, Claude’s replies and the steps it ran, as plain text. Task chats in Claude’s merged view save like any other chat.

Obsidian
How do I get my AI chats into Obsidian without copying them by hand?
Obsidian Web Clipper saves one chat per click, and Nexus AI Chat Importer turns each app’s data export into notes. Both are snapshots you redo when a chat grows. A tool that saves on its own, such as Carry, keeps each note current.

Should I keep raw AI chats in Obsidian, or just summaries?
Both, in different places. The summary is what you’ll reread, while the raw chat keeps what a summary drops: the exact command, the number, the option you ruled out. Keep raw chats in one folder you rarely open and link to them from your own notes.

Finding old chats
How do I find an old ChatGPT conversation?
Use Search in ChatGPT to look for it by name, and check Settings → Data controls → Archived chats, since archiving hides a chat from the sidebar without deleting it. If your chats are saved as files, a file search can look through every word of them.

Can I search my ChatGPT, Claude and Grok chats in one place?
Not inside the apps, since each one only holds its own chats. Saved as Markdown files in one folder, they can all be searched at once with Obsidian, Spotlight or grep.

About Carry
What does Carry save?
Each ChatGPT, Claude and Grok chat as its own Markdown file in a folder you pick, with the files you attach. Claude projects save as folders with their instructions, chats and files, though projects in Claude’s newer threads view don’t include their file library yet. It reads chats through each app’s internal API, the same data the app loads, not the page, so the middle of a long chat saves too. No Gemini, no ChatGPT Business workspaces, and no PDF or Word.
Which browsers does Carry work in?
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi and other Chromium browsers on a computer. Not Firefox, Safari or phones, though chats from the ChatGPT and Claude phone apps are in the same account, so they save too.
Does Carry upload my chats?
No. Your chats stay on your computer and are never uploaded, and there’s no Carry account or API key. It does download compatibility settings from carry.md and send anonymous usage counts, never your content, and you can turn both off.

Does Carry save my chats on its own?
ChatGPT and Claude chats save on their own every couple of hours while your browser is open, and each file updates in place when the chat changes. Grok is manual: press Save all while signed in to grok.com.

How much does Carry cost?
14 days free with no card, then $59 once: a one-time payment, no subscription, with a 14-day refund. The trial starts with your latest 5 chats per provider plus new ones, and your full history needs the license. When the trial ends, saving stops and the files you saved stay yours.

Can Carry recover deleted chats or move them to another account?
No. Carry keeps a copy of chats it already saved, and that file stays even if the chat is later deleted, but it can’t bring back a chat that was gone before it saved it. It also can’t move chats into another account, or reach one you’re signed out of or banned from.
