Claude exporter

Export Claude chats, projects and artifacts.

Claude keeps projects, artifacts and files as well as chats. Here is what each way of exporting keeps of them.

Sound familiar?

What people say about getting their chats out of Claude, and what actually helps, with or without Carry.

  • “Select all on a long chat only copies about two pages.”

The page holds only part of a long chat at a time. The export reads your account instead, and whatever you use, check the copy for the first message, the last and a phrase from the middle.

    Full answer
  • “If I downgrade from Max, do I lose my projects?”

Anthropic doesn’t say, and people report different results. Save your projects before the plan ends.

    Full answer
  • “There’s no way to export just one project.”

Claude’s export is the whole account, and Anthropic doesn’t say what it keeps of projects. Copy the instructions and download the files yourself, or have Carry save the project as a folder.

    Full answer
  • “My chat history and all my projects were just missing.”

Check claude.ai in a web browser, then request the export: if they’re in it, Anthropic still has them. If not, only a copy you saved earlier can help.

    Full answer
  • “My work account goes away when I leave this job.”

Save your chats before your last day. On Team and Enterprise plans members can’t export their own data, so ask the primary owner.

What you download vs what Carry saves

Claude’s export arrives as a download link by email. Anthropic doesn’t describe the files, but people who open recent exports find JSON, such as conversations.json, made for programs to read. Here is one chat both ways.

Anthropic doesn’t document the export format. This JSON shape comes from user reports, with the field names of Claude’s own chat data.

An export is a snapshot.

Claude’s export is a copy of the day you ask. Carry keeps saving new and changed chats on its own, and with a license it backfills the history already in your account. How backfill works

> [!note]- Thought for 6s
> Planning a single-file page with a countdown and one button

Here is a single-file timer page. It counts down 25 minutes of focus, then a 5-minute break, and the tab title shows the time left so you can see it from another tab.

Open it in any browser. Press Space to start or pause.

**Human**

Can it play a sound when the timer ends?

**Assistant**

Yes. It now plays a short beep from the Web Audio API, so there is no sound file to load.

Browsers only allow sound after a click on the page, so the first beep needs one press of Start, which you do anyway.

Here is a plan that moves from measurement to policy, with your interview notes in week 2. The district heat map from interview 3 makes a good baseline for week 1.

### 📄 Chapter 2 reading plan

# Chapter 2 reading plan

## Week 1: measuring the heat island

- Day 1–2: urban climate basics, then how surface and air temperature differ
- Day 3–4: two satellite studies of land surface temperature
- Day 5: compare their methods with the district heat map

## Week 2: what cities do about it

- Day 1–2: tree canopy and cool-roof programmes
- Day 3: your interview notes, coded by theme
- Day 4–5: write a two-page synthesis for the chapter outline

On the trial, Carry starts with your latest 5 chats, can expand to your latest 25, then saves each new one. A license adds the rest.

Your chats stay with you

  • Your chats stay on your computer: they go from your browser straight to your folder, and Carry never uploads them.
  • No Carry account and no API key. Carry reads through the Claude login you already have.
  • Carry asks for access to claude.ai only when you connect Claude.
  • Four browser permissions: scripting, storage, alarms and idle.
  • It does fetch compatibility settings from carry.md and send anonymous usage counts, never your content. You can turn both off.

Questions

Questions, answered.

How do I export my Claude chat history?

For all your chats at once, request Claude’s data export in Settings → Privacy on the web or in Claude Desktop. Anthropic says it holds your conversation data and account data, and the link arrives by email. On Team and Enterprise plans only the primary owner can export. For one chat, copy and paste it. For a copy that stays current, Carry saves your chats as Markdown in a folder you choose. Source: Anthropic’s help article

Does Claude’s data export include projects and artifacts?

Anthropic’s help article doesn’t say: it mentions conversation and account data only, and a user report found the export’s chats don’t record which project they came from. Carry saves each project as a folder with its instructions, chats and files, and artifacts from older chats with their chat. Newer published artifacts are saved as a link, and projects in Claude’s newer threads view don’t include their file library yet.

Can I export just one Claude chat?

Not with Claude’s export, which is all or nothing. Copy and paste works for a short chat; on a long one, check the copy has the first message, the last and a phrase from the middle. Carry keeps every chat as its own file.More: Can I export just one Claude chat?

How long is the export download link valid?

24 hours after it’s delivered. You must be signed in to download it. If it expires, request a new export.

Can I export Claude chats from the mobile app?

Not with Claude’s data export: it works on the web and in Claude Desktop only. Carry runs in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers on a computer, but chats from your phone are in the same account, so it saves them too.

Can I move my Claude chats to a new account?

Not between personal accounts: Anthropic says exported data can’t be imported into another one. Keep your chats as files and attach the ones you need in the new account, or add them to a project there.More: Can I move my Claude chats to another account?

Can I back up Claude chats as Markdown and then delete them?

Yes. Save the chat first, then open the file and check the first message, the last and a phrase from the middle before you delete it in Claude. A file Carry saved stays in your folder after the chat is gone from claude.ai.More: Can I back up Claude chats as Markdown and then delete them?

Is it free?

Claude’s own export comes with your account. Carry has a 14-day trial with no card, then $59 once: a one-time payment, no subscription, with a 14-day refund. The trial starts with your latest 5 chats, can expand to your latest 25, and saves new ones, plus instructions and files for a couple of projects; your full history needs the license. When the trial ends, saving stops and the files you saved stay yours.More: Pricing

Can I export to PDF or Word?

Not with Carry: it saves Markdown only, with no PDF or Word export. For a one-off PDF, use a PDF exporter, or open a saved Markdown file in Obsidian and use Export to PDF.

Does Carry upload my chats?

No. Your chats and files stay on your computer, in the folder you pick, and are never uploaded. There’s no Carry account and no API key: Carry reads through your Claude login and asks for access to claude.ai only when you connect Claude. It does download compatibility settings from carry.md, which sees ordinary request details like your IP address, and it sends anonymous usage counts, never your content. You can turn both off. Pressing Activate sends your license key to Polar, which sells the license.More: Privacy details

Is Carry made by Anthropic?

No. Carry is independent, not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic.
