ChatGPT history gone? Check these 6 things first
When ChatGPT history disappears, the chats are usually still in your account. The common causes, in order: the chat was archived, you’re signed in to a different account or workspace, a sidebar or sync bug is hiding chats that still exist, or the chat was a temporary chat that was never kept. Deleted chats are the only ones that don’t come back; that’s covered below. Fastest test: search for the chat’s title. If it shows up, it still exists.
Why your ChatGPT history is gone: check these in order
Each check takes a minute. Most people stop at the first one.
- Archived. Archiving removes a chat from the sidebar without deleting it, and the archive button sits right next to delete, so this is the most common cause. Check: Settings → Data controls → Archived chats. Fix: open the chat and unarchive it. Archived chats also still show up in search. The archived chats guide covers the details.
- Wrong account or workspace. ChatGPT keeps a separate history per account, and per workspace if you’re on Team, Business or Enterprise. Check: click your name at the bottom left and read the email and workspace shown. Fix: switch, or sign out and sign in with the account you used when you wrote the chat. Chats never move between accounts.
- Different sign-in method. Signing in with Google, Apple, Microsoft or an email password can create separate accounts on the same address, each with an empty history. Check: the sign-in screen for the method you used before. Fix: sign in that way instead.
- Outage or sync bug. An empty sidebar, chats that appear only after a few refreshes, or history missing on the phone app but present on the web: all regular reports on OpenAI’s forum. Check: open status.openai.com for a ChatGPT incident, then search for the chat by title. If search finds it, it exists. Fix: wait, refresh, or sign out and back in.
- Temporary chat. A chat started in temporary chat mode never appears in history. OpenAI may keep a safety copy for up to 30 days, but you can’t see it or get it back. Check: did the chat have the dashed temporary chat icon? There is no fix, only the copy you made at the time.
- Deleted. If the chat was deleted, by you, by someone sharing the account, by a workspace admin, or through Delete all chats, it’s gone from view at once and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. OpenAI says deleted chats can’t be restored through the app, the API or support.
If every check comes up empty and you didn’t delete anything, send OpenAI support your account email, your sign-in method, the workspace name if you have one, the approximate dates of the missing chats, and the checks you’ve done. That’s the list OpenAI’s own article asks for.
Can you recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?
No. Once a chat is deleted, there’s no trash folder, no undo and no support ticket that restores it. The 30-day window is how long OpenAI’s systems take to purge the data, not a grace period you can use.
The data export doesn’t help here either. Settings → Data controls → Export data packages what’s still in your account, and the ZIP arrives by email with a link that works for 24 hours. A deleted chat isn’t in it. The export is still worth requesting when chats are missing but not deleted: it’s the most complete picture of what OpenAI still has, including archived chats. On Business and Enterprise workspaces there’s no self-service export at all; ask the workspace owner.
Archived, wrong account, wrong sign-in method, a sync bug: the chats come back in nearly every case. Temporary chat or deleted: nothing you do restores them. A copy you saved earlier is the only way back.
How long does ChatGPT keep chat history?
- Saved chats
- Kept until you delete them or close the account. OpenAI publishes no expiry for a saved chat.
- Archived chats
- Same as saved chats. Archiving changes where a chat shows, not how long it’s kept.
- Deleted chats
- Removed from view immediately, purged from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, except data already de-identified or held for security or legal reasons.
- Temporary chats
- Never in your history. A safety copy may be kept for up to 30 days.
- Business and Enterprise
- Your workspace’s retention policy, set by an admin, decides how long chats stay.
None of this protects you from accidents: a deletion, a workspace change or a sidebar bug happens to your account, not to OpenAI’s servers.
How to make sure it doesn’t happen again
Two ways work. They differ in how much they catch.
The data export, on a schedule. Request it monthly. It’s free and complete, but it takes up to a week to arrive, you have to remember it, and anything written or deleted between exports is at risk.
A copy that updates itself. Carry, our Chrome extension, saves each ChatGPT chat as a Markdown file in a folder you choose. It reads the chat through ChatGPT’s own data, not the page, so long chats save whole. While your browser is open it checks for new and changed chats about every two hours and updates each file in place. Nothing is uploaded and there’s no Carry account. The limits are real: it can’t save a chat deleted before it ran, it doesn’t cover Business workspaces, and it’s Chrome only. The 14-day trial saves your newest 25 chats plus new ones; full history needs a one-time $59 license. The full guide to saving ChatGPT conversations covers the manual routes.
Whichever you pick, start today. Both methods only protect chats that still exist when they first run.
Common questions
Why did ChatGPT delete my chat by itself?
Does ChatGPT delete chats after 30 days?
Can OpenAI support restore a deleted conversation?
Does the data export include deleted chats?
Can Carry bring back chats I already lost?
Carry processes chats on your device and never uploads them. It downloads a signed compatibility file from carry.md and sends usage counts, which you can switch off; see privacy details.
