How to find and unarchive archived chats in ChatGPT
Archived chats in ChatGPT are under Settings → Data controls → Archived chats on the web, the desktop apps and the iPhone and Android apps. Open your profile menu, choose Settings, then Data controls, and select Archived chats. Each archived chat has an Unarchive button that puts it back in the sidebar. Search (Cmd/Ctrl+K, or the search icon on mobile) also finds archived chats by title.
Where to find archived chats in ChatGPT
The route is the same everywhere; OpenAI’s help page notes the label reads Archived chats or View archived chats depending on your device.
On the web (chatgpt.com)
- Click your profile picture or name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Next to Archived chats, click Manage (if it appears).
In the macOS or Windows app
Labels vary a little by app version.
- Click your profile at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Settings.
- Open Data controls, then Archived chats.
On iPhone or Android
Labels vary a little by app version.
- Open the sidebar (the two-line menu icon) and tap your name or profile picture.
- Tap Data controls, then Archived chats or View archived chats.
If it isn’t there either: check Projects in the sidebar, then any second account. Otherwise it may have been deleted; see why ChatGPT history disappears.
How to unarchive a chat in ChatGPT
- Open Settings → Data controls → Archived chats as above.
- Find the chat. Use search (Cmd/Ctrl+K, or the search icon on mobile) to find an archived chat by title.
- Click the Unarchive icon on its row. It returns to the sidebar.
OpenAI confirms archived chats stay searchable even though they’re hidden from regular history. Opening one from search doesn’t unarchive it; use the list for that.
How to bulk delete ChatGPT chats
ChatGPT has two delete options and nothing in between: one chat at a time from its ••• menu, or everything at once from Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats. There’s no checkbox mode for picking several chats. Browser extensions that add a selection mode fill the gap, but they can read your whole chat list, so check what one sends before you install it.
OpenAI says the Delete all chats action can’t be undone, and deleted chats can’t be restored in ChatGPT or by support. If anything in that list matters, request the data export first and wait for the ZIP to arrive before you confirm.
A middle path: archive the chats you want to keep (hover a chat, open its ••• menu, choose Archive; on mobile, press and hold), then delete the rest one by one. Settings → Data controls → Archive all chats clears the sidebar without deleting anything, reversible one chat at a time.
Does ChatGPT delete archived chats?
No. Archived and regular chats stay in your account until you delete them, and OpenAI’s retention page states that archiving a chat doesn’t change its retention period. The 30-day figure people search for applies to deletion, not archiving.
- Archived chat
- Kept until you delete it; searchable; unarchive any time
- Deleted chat
- Gone from your account at once; permanently deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days; no restore in the app or through support
- Temporary chat
- Never in your history; OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety
- Exceptions
- A workspace retention policy can remove chats earlier; OpenAI can hold data longer for security or legal reasons
So, does ChatGPT delete chats after 30 days? Not the ones you keep. Thirty days is how long a deleted chat can still exist on OpenAI’s side, and you can’t get it back during that window.
Archived isn’t backed up
Archiving moves a chat out of sight inside the same account. If the account is suspended, you switch workspaces, or someone presses Delete all, the archived list goes with everything else, and OpenAI won’t restore it. What survives is the official data export, a ZIP you request every so often, or a copy you keep as files.
Carry, which we make, is a Chrome extension that runs on your computer and saves each ChatGPT chat as a Markdown file in a folder you pick, on its own every couple of hours while Chrome is open. It reads your signed-in account’s chats from chatgpt.com, so chats you started in the phone app are included and long chats save whole. It never uploads your chats. A chat you later archive or delete stays in your folder as the file Carry already wrote. The 14-day trial saves your newest 25 chats plus new ones; full history is a one-time $59 license.
